Memorial To Victims Of Violence

During our last visit to Mexico City, we pop up with this amazing sculptural garden in Chapultepec, one of the most important parks of the City.

The project by Gaeta - Springall Architects plays the double role of public space and memorial. Violence is suggested in two dimensions: the void and the built. On one hand, the void proposed in the project is the space created between the steel walls and the trees. The void evokes the non-presence and the absence of the victims. On the other hand, the surfaces of the steel walls, rusty or mirroring, show that we can be contained or lost, and that we can add or multiply ourselves. Thus, if we see violence as destruction, building these seventy walls acts as an antidote to violence. The walls appear among the trees, setting off a dialogue between nature and architecture: forest of trees and forest of walls

In the central space, which is the main space of the memorial, there is a 1,200-square-meter reflective pool with an undetermined form and open geometry. It is open and undetermined like the rest of the project: an unfinished form that fuses materials. It is here that the walls shine in all their glory, arresting and dramatic, reflected shapes in the pools, drawing the eye to the skies and the water, elements that are natural and infinite. They become mirrors or canvasses. In them, visitors will see their reflection as well as the forests and will also be able to write, draw and express their feelings.

Rem Koolhaas

Lead architect behind Fondazione Prada in Milan

“The Fondazione is not a preservation project and is not a new architecture,” explained Rem Koolhaas, the founder of OMA, “Two conditions that are usually kept separate here confront each other in a state of permanent interaction – offering an ensemble of fragments… New, old, horizontal, vertical, wide, narrow, white, black, open, and enclosed.” Its design is characterized by a collision of architectural styles and construction techniques, some time-honored, others wholly original.

“By introducing so many spatial variables, the complexity of the architecture will promote an unstable, open programming.”…………  Rem Koolhaas

Gold Leaf

The Haunted House, a gallery dedicated to site-specific artworks has it’s entire exterior, including gutters and window mullions, refinished in 24-karat gold leaf, “We discovered that gold is actually a cheap cladding material compared to traditional claddings like marble and even paint,” said Koolhaas, “What I love is the way it contaminates the walls around it… The environment needed a little color.”

Since I first saw a piece of Caralarga I fall in love with the simplicity, I started to follow them and could not believe the studio was located in Querétaro my home town city, so of course when we came back from the Netherlands It was one of the first things I wanted to visit.

Daphna Laurens - Colfront

This Year, Daphna Laurens made several apparitions throughout the city during DDW. One of our favourites was their Colfront installation in the newly renovated building of Strijp T in Eindhoven.

By experimenting with a very well known industrial product - Colback - a textile used for millions of applications that you never see, meaning it’s always applied “under the hood”, Daphna Laurens have created a set of room dividers and curtains that where put together using several layers of the material and combined using ultrasonic welding!

The terms sound super technical but for us it was a beautiful, extremely simple set up that proved once again that by experimenting with known materials in a different way, we can create new textures that can be used in many different ways.

Congratulations guys! the installation looked beautiful. Its always exciting to catch you for DDW.
